Description
"Take Vesuvius away from Naples, and the enchanted song of the siren will have lost its sweetest harmonies... Vesuvius is the heart, the soul and the encapsulation of all the splendours of the Bay of Naples ..."
[Renato Fucini, Napoli ad occhio nudo, 1877]

The profile "of the formidable mount Vesuvius the exterminator” [Leopardi] is impressed upon the collective consciousness of the wonders of the world, the natural symbol of the Bay of Naples, the destination and place of pilgrimage of travellers of all periods, a permanent laboratory for scientific experimentation, the icon of landscape painting from antiquity to contemporary artists.

The summit of Vesuvius has a 360° view that is worth the climb alone, a view stretching to the horizon towards the eastern plain from the dense curtain of towns around Vesuvius to the city of Naples, culminating in the beauty of the Bay of Naples, the Phlegraean Fields, Ischia, Procida, to the west and the magic of Capri to the south.
It is the most famous volcano in the world, the protagonist of over two thousand years of natural, anthropological and social transformations that still capture the collective consciousness and could still unleash surprises.

Features of the path
•overall length: 3,807 m
•maximum height: 1,170 m asl
•difference in height: c. 140 m
•average gradient: 14 %
•difficulty: average
•travelling time: 3-hour round trip

Climatic conditions
The temperature on the crater in autumn and winter is lower than at the foot of the volcano. The wind can suddenly increase in intensity. In the case of a weather alert due to adverse conditions issued by the civil protection agency of Regione Campania (the regional government of Campania), the path may be closed.
Given the features of the path and especially due to the particularly steep slope, the climb up the crater is unadvisable for people with complex disorders such as breathing and heart problems.
